Overcoming the Fear of Tentmaking

The thought of tentmaking scares a lot of pastors, missionaries and others in ministry. Many of them have never worked outside of ministry and they wonder if they have the skills to be successful.

I’ve got good news.

The gifting that many people in ministry have is exactly what’s needed to be successful in a side business. You need to love people & serve them well. And you need to help them solve a problem they have. Most of you are already great at that!

Christian counselors help people overcome fear by strengthening faith in God and taking small steps of increasing exposure to that fear over time.

The solution to fear is not to suppress it, avoid it, or deny it. It’s to trust God & gradually be exposed to the fear over time until your fear is diminished.

The same is true with tentmaking.

The best way to overcome the fear of tentmaking is faith & exposure. Trust God & start doing a little bit of tentmaking. We’re not talking about quitting your job or diving into the deep end.

Just focus on earning your first $1,000 outside of ministry.

Once you do that, try to earn your first $5,000 pursuing a tentmaking side hustle.

Then try to scale to $10,000, then $20,000, then a part-time income, and then a full-time income if you'd like. However much you need.

By this point, your fear will likely have dissipated significantly. You’ve been exposed to tentmaking, had some small successes, and realized it’s not as scary as you thought.

So, if you want to overcome your fear of tentmaking, start doing it! Start small and begin to accumulate wins. No major life changes. Just a little gig on the side.

Tentmaking has been life changing for me and so many of my friends. I can’t wait to hear your stories as you begin to take steps of faith in this direction!
