I Got Denied Twice And Then This Happened

travel hacking Aug 29, 2024

I’ve been talking a lot about the all-time high Chase Ink Business Preferred bonus (here & here). Apparently, everyone else is too because I get emails on a regular basis talking about how great it is.

Well, we decided to try something that we haven’t done before & we weren’t sure if it would even work.

Here’s a little backstory:

  • When the big Chase Ink welcome bonus first came out, I wasn’t sure I’d be able to get it. Why, you might ask? Because I was already at 5/24. Technically, Chase shouldn’t approve me for any more of their cards until I drop back down under 5/24.
  • I thought I would try anyway since the bonus was so great, and to my surprise, I was instantly approved! What?!? It’s not common that they’ll violate their 5/24 rule, but I’ve read online that sometimes they may still let you nab a business card. It’s rare, though.
  • Once I hit the minimum spend, we immediately had my wife apply for the same card. We applied under the same exact business name, but she was the applicant rather than me. Hers was not instantly approved but a few hours later we got an email saying it had been approved.
  • We rushed to hit the minimum spend on her card, even using some bank funding like I wrote about in last week’s newsletter.
  • Knowing that the deadline was coming up to get the big bonus and the big referral bonus (9/3/24), we wanted to do something that we were almost sure wouldn’t work.
  • I decided to apply AGAIN for a business card using another one of our businesses just about a month after getting approved for the other card. This wasn’t likely because I was at 5/24 and they had already made one exception. And I had just gotten the same card a month before, albeit with a different business.

Ok, that’s the backstory. Now let me bring you to this past week.

When I applied for the card, I was not instantly approved & after they reviewed it, the card was denied. Rats! But it made sense. That was our first denial.

Like always, I called the reconsideration line and asked them to reconsider. They asked me some additional questions, did some digging, and they denied me again. Man!

Two denials now. Time to give up, right?

Well, I’m a bit stubborn, so I decided to call again the next day and ask for one more reconsideration.

I told them that they could move some of the credit from one of my other business cards to this card so that they wouldn’t have to increase my credit line to approve me for this business card.

The customer service rep was very helpful but not really optimistic that this would work.

She told me she’d put in the notes that I was willing to move some credit from one of my other cards to this card & that I’d hear back from them soon.

About 5 minutes later, I got an email saying I was approved for the card!!!!

I couldn’t believe it!

Here’s the moral of the story. If you get denied on a credit card application, don’t give up.

Like we teach in the Travel Hacking Course, call the reconsideration line.

And even if they decline you there, try again on a different day.

It’s not a guarantee, but this is certainly the first time I’ve been approved for a card after 2 denials in a row.

I’ll definitely update you soon on the tally of the points we accumulated with just this one card plus the referral bonuses. It’s already pretty big!

Oh, and remember, you don’t have to redeem all of these points for travel. You could redeem them for cash as well. So even if you’ve accumulated more points than you can use for travel, keep accumulating and draw them out in cash.

Another stream of income — nice!

And if you decide to apply for this card before the deadline in a few days, would you consider using our referral link? We’d be so thankful! Here it is:
