5 Nights in Washington DC for Free

travel hacking Mar 31, 2023

Our family just got back from our Spring Break trip to Washington DC.

We had a blast.

Neither me, nor my wife, nor our daughters had been to DC & we all wanted to see the White House, the Capitol, the museums, and the monuments. Oh, and the cherry blossoms too!

And it didn’t disappoint.

Here’s how we booked the trip for nearly free:

  • I booked a round-trip Southwest flight with 40,749 of my Southwest miles. I could’ve booked with fewer miles but I booked fairly close to the departure date. You can often get the best point redemptions if you book further out.
  • My wife also booked a round-trip Southwest flight with 40,749 of her Southwest miles.
  • Since we both have Companion Passes, we were able to each add one of our daughter’s as a companion for free (well, we had to pay $11.20 in taxes, but nearly free). I’ll link below to our past newsletters that describe how to earn the Companion Pass.
  • We love staying at Park Hyatts and we booked the Park Hyatt Washington DC for 112,000 Hyatt points for 5 nights. We didn’t earn these points from spend on our Hyatt cards. Instead, we earned them through our Chase cards & transferred the points 1:1 from Chase to Hyatt. Because our Hyatt cards give us Hyatt status, we were able to get a room upgrade to a Junior Suite for free.
  • Since my wife had the Chase Sapphire Reserve card, we were able to earn 10x points when we took Lyft’s around the city & we also automatically received reimbursements for many of our Lyft rides as a part of the yearly travel credit on this card.

Our main costs on this trip were food & several museum tickets. We visited the Bible Museum & it was well worth the cost!

We’ve taken trips like this over & over again for nearly free and I’d love to show you how.

I’ll link to various articles here that will help you earn Chase Ultimate Rewards Points, Southwest Miles, and Hyatt Points to go on more vacations for nearly free.
