More Companion Pass Perks

This blog post is a continuation of the last post. You can read that first here if you haven't already: The Holy Grail of Travel Rewards.

The Southwest Companion pass truly is an amazing travel reward!

In fact, it's the gift that keeps on giving.

You can get it again, and again, and again. And not just you. Your spouse can get it too.

My wife and I have both had a Companion Pass for the last 2 years and we are about to renew my wife’s for another 2 years. That means that both of our daughters have traveled free as our companions on all of the trips we've been on the last few years.

How cool is that?

Here are the details.

You are allowed to receive the welcome bonuses on the Southwest cards once in a 24 month period. If you earn the bonuses on both a Southwest personal & business card right at the beginning of the year (and reach the 125,000 points), you'll have the Companion Pass for the rest of that year & all of the following year (nearly 2 years). By the time your Companion Pass is about to expire, you'll be almost to the point where you can apply for the cards again & repeat the process.

And your spouse can do this same thing!

My wife just applied for & was approved for the Southwest Rapid Rewards Priority Card (again), with the all-time high 100,000 point welcome bonus. And she was also just approved for the Southwest Rapid Rewards Performance Business Card (again) with an 80,000 point welcome bonus. Her Companion Pass expired at the end of last month (December 2021) & so she'll get it again later this month (January) when we hit the 125,000 points with the welcome bonuses (we'll actually be at 197,000 points with the bonuses & the spend on each card to hit the bonuses).

We don't really travel enough to justify me getting it again right away, so I'll wait for 2 more years while she has her Companion Pass, and then when hers is about to expire, I'll go ahead & get mine for the following 2 years. That way one of us will always have a Companion Pass where a child can travel with us for free.

A few words of wisdom:

  • Make sure you read the fine print on the terms & conditions of the credit cards. It will explain more about the 24 month rule and other requirements you'll want to be familiar with.
  • Make sure you follow the other Chase requirements like the 5/24 rule, the 30 day rule, etc.

You can learn more about all of this in the Travel Hacking Course & get help in our Travel Hacking Community if you have further questions.

And, if you decide to apply for one of the cards, will you use our referral link? It gives us extra points for referring you - yay! Then once you get the card, you can have other friends & family use your referral link & you'll get extra points as well!

Hope you'll get your Companion Pass with us in 2022!
