Is Your Tentmaking Idea Legitimate?

The legitimacy question tends to go round and rounf rather than resolve itself.

Am I allowed to do this? Is this compatible with ministry?

Here's a simpler way to work through it.

Ask what you're actually thinking of providing. If what you're offering genuinely helps someone, whether that's counsel, a skill, a service or a piece of teaching, that's not a grey area.

Value exchanged for value is not a compromise, it's how honest work has always functioned! Check it against your calling.

The question isn't "does this feel comfortable," it's "does this pull me away from what God has called me to, or does it support it."

Those are two very different tests, and most people are answering the first one while thinking they've answered the second.

Bring it into the light early. Legitimacy struggles in the dark!

A conversation with a trusted friend, or your leadership team, even an early, unfinished one, tends to shrink the fear faster than months of private wrestling ever will.

Separate scripture from assumption. A lot of the guilt pastors carry around finances didn't come from the Bible.

It came from a culture inside ministry that decided earning outside the church was suspect.

It's worth asking where your discomfort actually comes from before you let it make the decision for you.

None of this replaces wisdom or counsel specific to your situation.

But if you've been stuck circling the question of 'is it ok to do this' rather than working through it, these few checks are usually enough to get you moving again.
