Extra Income for a Stay-at-Home Mom

My wife always dreamed of being a stay-at-home mom. I shared her dream and we’ve always lived on one full-time income.

As the kids started growing up, she was interested in finding a way to make some extra spending money without giving up her dream.

We didn’t need the money, but she thought if she could work for herself a few hours on the side, it would be more like a hobby than a job. And it would give her some extra cash.

Her mom was a real estate agent. She was a full-time teacher but became an agent for extra money on the side. Her mom helped friends and family buy and sell houses and she made some great money doing it.

Her mom always told her she wished she had been able to be a stay-at-home mom. That’s probably part of what influenced by wife’s dream.

My wife has always loved house projects and so watching her mom in real estate inspired her to give it a try herself.

She took an in-person class to get her real estate license while our daughters were in school. I think it was a couple of 4 day classes lasting about 6 hours each day. Then she had to sit for the exam after that.

Once she got her license, she joined a local brokerage and started letting friends and family know she could help them buy or sell if they were ever interested.

She had several clients in her first year and I remember her making between $20,000-$30,000.

That’s significant extra income for a family in ministry.

I was amazed you could make that much working at it as little as she did. She enjoyed helping people buy and sell houses, so it was probably something she would’ve volunteered to do just to help the people she loved. And she felt like it got her out of the house on occasion, “interacting with adults,” as she’d often say.

After her first year, some years she’d make $5,000 and some years $20,000+. She didn’t push it much and just took clients as they came to her. If it fit into her schedule as a stay-at-home mom, she’d take it, and if not, she’d refer it to someone else.

What encouraged me to write this blog was that another family member in ministry just did the same thing.

She’s been a stay-at-home mom ever since she had kids. Now that her kids are in school, she wanted a little extra income without having to get a job or work many hours per week.

She got her license & she just helped her first client close on their house a few weeks ago. She made $10,890.

Isn’t that awesome? Great extra income for a family in ministry!

Getting a real estate license and representing friends and family on the side can be a good way for a stay-at-home mom to make some extra income while still remaining at home.
