A Driveway Full of Teslas

life hacking Aug 21, 2026

A few weeks ago, I wrote a newsletter about my daughter graduating quickly from college.

A friend of mine, Roy Moran, responded to the email and jokingly said, “Wait, you didn’t tell the best part, she owns a car and doesn’t drive it, it drives her!

Let me give you the backstory.

A few weeks ago Roy and I were at an event together and I told him he needed to “drive” my Tesla. I said there were only 2 rules: [1] Don’t touch the steering wheel and [2] Don’t touch the pedals. I’m sure it sounded crazy to Roy but he was up for the experience.

As the car started to drive him to our destination, he immediately grabbed his phone & started videoing the experience because he, like most people, have trouble believing it the first time they experience it. The car literally drives itself and all you have to do is look forward. It’s called FSD (Full-Self Driving).

Our story with Tesla began a year ago when my Dad decided to buy one for himself. He loved it so much he convinced us to get one and then later both of my daughters ended up getting one (hence Roy’s response to my email above).

Honestly, our house looks like a Tesla dealership.

I’m not sure if I realized ahead of time the significant cost savings the Teslas would provide for our family.

We got our Tesla before gas spiked & even then, the gas savings were tremendous. Imagine how much we were saving once gas went up.

Add to that the fact that our daughters, ages 19 and 16, were causing our monthly auto insurance premiums to be significantly elevated. When they got their Teslas, and got on Tesla Insurance, my primary policy dropped dramatically. Tesla Insurance tends to insure on driving behavior & use of FSD more than on age. As a result, my daughters weren’t penalized for their age which resulted in a significant savings.

Add to this how much safer I feel with my daughters driving on FSD basically 100% of the time. The car can see so many things a human driver can’t. And then, much to my surprise, after having my daughter’s Teslas for a month, my insurance premium dropped another $100/mo because they drove with FSD enabled most of the time (and Tesla Insurance rewards this behavior).

All in all, we’re saving significantly on gas, insurance, and, as a dad/husband, I’m so thankful that my wife and girls are being driven around by a robot who can see & respond to situations much quicker than they can.

Oh, and if you don’t want to spend much on a car for a teenager (or yourself), you can find deals on used Teslas online. I have several friends that have bought used.

If you haven’t experienced FSD, you probably won’t believe it until you try it. Ask a friend to drive you around or head to a Tesla dealership for a free test drive.

You may find that getting Teslas moving forward will be a significant monthly savings for your family.

Oh, and if you end up buying one, shoot me an email and ask for my referral link. They’ll give both of us some perks! 😃
