5 Skills Pastors Already Have (and How to Monetize Them)

Uncategorized Oct 17, 2025

If you're a pastor or in ministry and looking to boost your income, you might be sitting on a goldmine without even realizing it. The skills you use every week in ministry? They're often exactly what people are willing to pay for in the marketplace.

You don't need to learn something completely new or spend years getting another qualification. You just need to repackage what you already do and find the right audience. Here are five skills you probably already have, and how real pastors are turning them into income streams.

1. Counseling

You've been doing pastoral counseling for years. You know how to listen, ask the right questions, and help people work through their struggles. That's a valuable skill.

I know a pastor (actually more than one!) who'd been counseling people in his church for years but had never been formally qualified. He decided to get properly certified as a counselor, and now he has a successful private practice as a side income. He's still in ministry, but he's also getting paid for the counseling work he was already doing informally.

If you've got experience in this area, consider getting the qualifications and setting up a practice. People are actively looking for Christian counselors who understand their faith perspective.

2. Writing

Pastors are writers. You craft sermons, write devotionals, create Bible study materials. That's a skill businesses and organizations will pay for.

My first ever side income stream was writing a blog for dads. I got paid to do what I was already comfortable with, just for a different audience. It wasn't huge money at first, but it proved that my writing had value outside the church walls.

Freelance writing, ghostwriting, content creation for organizations, there's a whole market out there. Start pitching your services or look for writing gigs on platforms like Upwork or Contently.

3. Public Speaking

You stand up and communicate to groups of people every single week. That's public speaking. And guess what? Businesses pay good money for presentation skills training.

I know a pastor who now helps sales teams improve their presentation skills. He took what he does naturally in the pulpit and translated it into corporate training. Same skill, different context, solid income.

If you're confident on stage, look into speaking coaching, corporate training, or even paid speaking gigs at conferences and events outside the church world.

4. Course Creation and Coaching

This is my preferred method right now. If you've got expertise in any area (theology, leadership, marriage, parenting, time management), you can package that into an online course or coaching program.

The beauty of this model is that it scales. You create the content once, and it can generate income over and over. Plus, you're making a real impact in people's lives.

If you're thinking about getting started with course creation this month, I've got a special offer running throughout October. Join my free community to find out more and get the support you need to launch your first course.

5. Airbnb Hosting

Okay, this one's a bit different, but definitely viable. A growing number of pastors are converting part of their property (a basement, a garage conversion, a spare room) or buying additional properties to rent out on Airbnb.

It's not a skill in the traditional sense, but it's using what you have (or can acquire) to create a steady income stream. Some pastors are making thousands a month from short-term rentals, and it doesn't require them to trade time for money once it's set up.

The Bottom Line

You don't need to start from scratch. Look at what you're already good at, find a market that needs it, and start small. The skills that make you effective in ministry can also help you build financial margin for your family.

What skill could you monetize this month?
